Ridin’ Trails and Writin’ Rhymes: Cowboy Poetry Comes to Santa Marta

There is something timeless about a good story told well, especially when it comes wrapped in a rhyme and a little cowboy wisdom. This August, Santa Marta is delighted to host an afternoon that celebrates exactly that.

On Tuesday, August 18 at 2:30 p.m., we welcome Ron Wilson for “Ridin’ Trails and Writin’ Rhymes: Cowboy Culture of Kansas,” a warm and engaging presentation of stories and cowboy poetry. The event is free and open to the public, and we would love to see our neighbors, friends, and family members join us.

Meet the “Poet Lariat”

Ron Wilson is a nationally known cowboy poet and an ambassador for Western heritage, though he prefers a title with a little more rope in it. He calls himself a “poet lariat,” a cowboy’s playful spin on poet laureate.

By day, Ron serves as director of the Huck Boyd National Institute for Rural Development at Kansas State University. His career has taken him from the halls of the U.S. Senate, where he worked on agriculture policy, back home to the historic family ranch near Manhattan, Kansas, where he lives today. He also produces a weekly radio program and column called “Kansas Profile,” which celebrates the people and places of rural Kansas. He has been sharing his presentations with audiences across the state through Humanities Kansas since 2010.

His poetry, in his own words, is “all original, humorous, family-friendly, patriotic, and most of the time, it even rhymes.”

Discover the Stories Behind Kansas Cowboy Culture

Kansas holds a special place in the story of the American cowboy. As a key crossroads of the frontier trails, it helped bring the legend to life, from Abilene to Dodge City, from the Chisholm Trail and “Gunsmoke” fame to the beef industry we know today.

Ron’s presentation weaves that rich history and folklore together with original poems and memorable stories, offering an afternoon that is as educational as it is entertaining. Whether you grew up around ranch life or simply love a good tale, there is something here to enjoy.
