Golf is a game that takes a lot of practice to get anywhere close to good. But whether you’re a scratch golfer or spend most of your time searching for your ball in the deep rough, most everyone can agree that raising money for a good cause by playing a round matters far more than anyone’s stroke total. (Although winning bragging rights by coming in with the lowest score is a close second.)
That’s why we were so excited to host our inaugural Santa Marta Scramble at the Nicklaus Golf Club — an 18-hole championship course designed by the Golden Bear himself — at LionsGate on Monday, October 20, 2025.
While we planned the first-ever Santa Marta Scramble in just six months, we still welcomed more than 100 golfers and raised over $62,000 for the Santa Marta Legacy Fund, which directly benefits the Benevolent Care Fund and the seniors who call Santa Marta home.
As a Catholic Life Plan Community sponsored by the Archdiocese of Kansas City, Kansas, Santa Marta is dedicated to supporting exceptional lives for active seniors and caring for them through every stage of life. As lifespans continue to increase, some residents may outlive their financial resources. When that happens, Santa Marta provides benevolent care without hesitation — meaning no one is ever asked to leave.
Because we don’t participate in Medicaid, every dollar of benevolent care we provide is funded entirely by Santa Marta. That’s why fundraisers like the Santa Marta Scramble are so important. Thanks to our generous supporters, we’re able to continue making a lasting difference in the lives of area seniors. It’s through the generosity of participants, sponsors, and friends that this important mission continues to thrive.
After a 10:00 a.m. shotgun start on a beautiful fall day, golfers enjoyed a full round of championship play until the final ball rattled into the cup on the 18th hole. Then everyone gathered for a reception to relive the highlights of their round over a post-play bourbon tasting hosted by J. Rieger & Co.
The celebration also featured the announcement of our raffle and silent auction winners. This year’s silent auction included a Dormie Network Stay and Play Package valued at $5,400 — the perfect prize for anyone looking to continue testing their game.
As the last golf carts were parked and clubs were packed away, one sentiment was unanimous: everyone couldn’t wait for next year. No ifs, ands, or putts about it.
Plans are already underway to make the 2026 Santa Marta Scramble even bigger, better, and more impactful. Whether you’re a seasoned golfer or just enjoy the social side of the sport, we invite you to join us next year for another round of great golf in support of an even greater cause.
