No matter how you choose to observe the holiday, what makes this time of year unlike any other is gathering with plenty of good friends, delicious food, and festive decorations. At Santa Marta, holiday cheer spreads throughout our community, so you can’t help but have a little extra pep in your step and a holiday song in your heart.
While we’re always open to any and every reason to enjoy ourselves, November through the end of the year is when things really take off. From Thanksgiving to our annual Holiday Party and New Year’s Eve celebration, there are plenty of holiday activities for seniors to do on our campus.
We’re also in a part of the Kansas City metro area that offers spectacular light displays, festivals, and other entertainment options. Here’s a list of our favorite senior holiday events in and around Johnson County.

- For the 95th year, The Country Club Plaza will be adorned in thousands of twinkling lights.
- Union Station offers towering trees, festive decorations, and classic seasonal films plus, the Holiday Reflections walk-thru village is a mesmerizing stroll through one of Kansas City’s most historic spaces.
- Winter Magic at Platte Purchase Park features a spectacular drive-through display lit with a mile of lights.
- Christmas in the Park and Longview Lake Park is another festive drive-through display with more than 500,000 lights.
- Vaile Mansion in Independence offers tours of their Victorian home decked out in its finest holiday decor for A Victorian Fashionable Christmas.
- Powell Gardens Festival of Lights features sparkling sights and light installations to explore along their glowing paths.
Festive Holiday Shows and Music
- Catch a performance of The Nutcracker put on by the Kansas City Ballet at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts,
- Kansas City Symphony offers a pair of holiday performances in Handel’s Messiah and Christmas Festival of the season’s favorite tunes at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.
- A Christmas Carol is a favorite holiday tradition put on by The Kansas City Repertory Theatre at Spencer Theatre.
- A Charlie Brown Christmas, featuring the classic tunes from the TV special, will be performed by Kansas City Jazz Orchestra at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts.

- Crown Center and the Hallmark Christmas Experience provides a showcase for local vendors offering home goods, clothing, and artisan gifts.
- The City Market’s Merry Market is an outdoor shopping extravaganza featuring more than 75 retailers throughout the streets of the market.
- Annual Holiday Swing features local artists and makers offering crafts, handmade artwork, and much more.
- Westport Christmas Market will feature local vendors and live music performances.
